Prologue
Today’s my eighteenth birthday, and the day I finally become a fully patched member of the Reapers MC. Some men would kill to be in my shoes right now, hell some have, but all I feel is rage. Pure boiling rage.
All my life, my future has been planned for me. I’ve had no choice in the path set before me. My father wouldn’t hear of it. I’m the son of Tony “Wrecker” Evans, and I’ve known since I was just a boy that this day would come.
At one point, I couldn’t wait to put on the cut I’ll receive today. But now? I hate he’s taken away my choices. That everyone expects me to become just like him, a man I despise with every bone in my body.
But to protect those I love, what choice do I have?
Chapter 1
I lay my head on the threadbare pillow beneath me. Staring up at the bunk bed above me, I see the progression of my disdain for this fucking club. “Mini”, what was once my nickname, is drawn in frilly, large, girly lettering dead center above my head. Reaching up, I run my fingers over the word. I’ll never forget the day my best friend Reine spent making it perfect…
“Come on, Reine,” I whine at her, throwing my body into the bunk across the room. “You’ve been doing this crap for hours. I want to go back out to the party.”
“Shut up, Eric. I’m almost done. Besides, why do you want to be out there?” she asks, pointing to the door with her blue-stained finger. “They’ll just make you their errand boy, running around like a little slave.”
Shoving up onto my elbows, I glare at her, “No, no, they fucking won’t. Besides, Wrecker said tonight I’ll get to see how he protects the club. I need to learn, Reine.”
With a sigh, she goes back to her work. Silently, I watch her as small shavings of blue and green fall into her hair and onto her face. I don’t know when she stopped being the tomboy who’d kick my ass to a girl… a girl who makes my body do things I can’t control.
Her pops has already told me all the things he’ll do to me if I put a hand on his daughter. When I feel my jeans tighten, I know I can’t stay in here anymore. Hawk doesn’t scare me, but he’s still the president of the club and deserves respect. That’s what Wrecker says anyway.
“I’m going to find my dad, Reine,” I tell her, rising from the mattress.
“Tsk, tsk, tsk, impatient much? Besides it’s done,” she says, slipping off the bunk. “Come and see.” In three short steps, I’m in front of her. Before I have a chance to look at what she’s done, she grabs me by the arm. “And you better not let him hear you call him dad again. I can’t sit and watch him whoop you another time.”
With a nod, I rub the side of my face, still yellow from the bruise he gave me a few weeks ago. Apparently, being a dad is a weakness Wrecker can’t afford to have.
Pushing the memory from my mind, I move onto the mattress of my bunk. I see her work above me. “Mini” is written in swirling shades of blue and green.
Running my fingers across the letting, I tell her, “It’s beautiful, Reine.” I’m sure to get my ass kicked for it, but the smile that beams from her face will be worth it.
She was so proud of the finished work that she fucked up some of the prospects when they tried to tease me about her fancy handwriting. No one dares to tease the princess of the Reapers MC without consequence. The prospects should’ve known that. If they didn’t then they do now. Hawk was less than pleased to find out they’d engaged with her. They’ll be on bitch duty for a year if they’re lucky.
The shades of blue and green forever staining the worn wood are marred by four deep cuts—reminding me always of the name which will be stitched on the cut I receive today.
“Wake up, fucker,” someone hollers through the door across the room as they pound on the flimsy wood. That fucking plaque hits the floor as they do.
“Prospect Hole” is what they call this damned room I share with three other rancid, dirty men. I’ve been the youngest prospect of the Reapers MC for more years than I’d care to admit. But today is the day it comes to an end, and it’s a day I’ve dreaded for almost two years—a day that for most is one of celebration.
“I’m fucking awake,” I scream, praying whoever the fuck is out there leaves me in peace.
Without thought, I rear back and punch the shit out of the frame above me. One, two, three times, continuing until the wood is splintered and no longer whole. The day has come for me to start my life as a patched member of the Reapers MC. Wished for, or not, this is the life I lead.
Chapter 2
Every member of the Reapers MC young and old is crammed into the clubhouse to see it, to see the son of Wrecker make the pledge. A pledge to serve the MC until his dying breath, just as they all have. Each of them knows precisely what Wrecker would do to them if they didn’t show him and his son the respect he demands.
A wicked smile is plastered to Wrecker’s face as I stand beside my mother and watch her try to hold her head high as he fondles the whore in his lap. Even the mother of his only son isn’t free from his torture.
She loves him still. He knows it, but after she had my sister Lilly, he threw her away and took me from her. A woman is only worth anything if she can give you sons. Or so he thinks anyway.
Leaning over, I whisper in her ear, “Really you didn’t have to come, Ma.”
With tears glistening in her eyes, she shakes her head. “No, I will not miss such an important day for you. Besides, I know all about my husband’s extracurricular activities. I’ll be fine.” Reaching over, she squeezes my hand with a small smile. She holds her tears in, knowing it would give him nothing but pleasure to see them fall, sick bastard that he is.
Hawk steps on top of the bar, yelling for silence over the commotion of so many people crammed into the space. The president of the Reapers MC is lean and tall. His shoulder-length, graying hair is pulled back in a knot at the base of his neck. With crystal blue eyes, he scans the room, demanding they obey him with just a look.
Reaching back, he takes his daughter's hand, pulling her to the bar top beside him. Reine has stepped into the role of Cessy with every bone in her body. My best friend became the princess of the MC, a woman I hardly know. As she searches me out in the crowd, I see the girl I once knew. The best friend who’s been by my side almost every day of my life.
In truth, our distance is my fault. I couldn’t give Wrecker someone to hurt me with. Princess or not, he would’ve found a way to take her from me, and I couldn’t let that happen. He already has enough ammunition between Ma and Lilly. I didn’t know how to protect a third woman then and still don’t. The stranger she’s become over the past few years is the only way to keep her sa
fe.
“Eric Evans, come,” Hawks voice booms through the room as the brothers’ banter silences.
Those around me move to cut a path to the bar. With a deep breath, I take sure steps to stand below him. He stands with his feet apart, hand on his pistol. Looking down on me, his eyes scan my face, and for a split second, I see pity there.
“Eric Evans, son of Wrecker, today you join us in a brotherhood for life. Do you accept this brotherhood? For the only way to break it is death. Do you understand?”
Without hesitation, I look the man in his eyes and reply, “I do.”
“For honor and death, it is done,” Hawk tells me with a nod.
Hopping off the bar, Cessy lands beside me. Reaching up, she takes the box her father has been handed. Removing the lid, she pulls the crisp, black leather from its paper. Without a word, I put my arms out behind me as she slides my cut up and over my shoulders.
Once it’s finally in place, the room erupts with cheers. I don’t join them in celebration, my finger instead running over the name patch on my chest. One letter will serve as a constant reminder of just who I come from, and precisely what he’s capable of.
X
My father is a sick, twisted man who has no care for anything in this world but that which can benefit him. I’ve known this for a very long time. Ever since the first time he made me sit and watch how they punished people for betraying the club. Sometimes I swear I can still smell the burning of that poor bastard’s arm. No eleven-year-old should ever have to see that shit.
I don’t know why I thought he’d never turn his anger on me. That somehow, I was safe from his perversions because he was my father. Never could I have been more fucking wrong. The twenty-six stitches it took to close the wounds across my back can attest to that. It’s been years since he took payment out in my skin, and I swear there are mornings where my scars still ache like he whipped me only yesterday.
“Why do they call you X,” Cessy asks in my ear, halting my internal rantings and the path of my fingers.
“So, I’ll always remember,” I answer quietly, looking over my shoulder at the man whose footsteps I follow. A man I know in my heart is pure evil.
Turning my chin so I face her, I see the questions written across her face. She wants answers. Answers I cannot give. “It doesn’t matter, Cess. It’s done.”
Chapter 3
“You going in?” Loki chides as he pushes by me to walk through the doorway.
Blue Bells… Of course, the celebration is being held here. Just another way for Wrecker to remind me of the life he let me keep. Just being here brings back the memory of that night. A night that still haunts my dreams…
With a clap on my shoulder, Wrecker pulls me from the shit show of drunks I watch in the clubhouse. “Come on, Mini. We have something that needs to be taken care of.”
My stomach starts to turn at the thought of what he’ll make me witness tonight. As a prospect, I’m not yet allowed to participate in punishment, but Wrecker is bound and determined I’ll know exactly what’s expected from me in the future.
Never in a million years would I have imagined he’d bring me to Blue Bells. I know the Reapers run the strip club. Ma has told me for years that if she ever found out I came here, she’d cut my balls off.
“Is there someone here causing trouble?” I ask, looking over at Wrecker, confused as to what punishment would need to be doled out here. This is Wraith’s place. He handles all disagreements with the blessing of Hawk. As the club VP, there aren’t many who’d be stupid enough to cross him.
“The only one causing trouble tonight will be you,” Wrecker says with a chuckle as he climbs out of the truck.
We make our way inside the club, and it only takes me a moment to know why Ma didn’t want me here. There are women everywhere and their clothes... Well, they don’t have much of them. I can feel the heat in my cheeks as Wrecker makes his way to the stage. Thank God, it’s too dark in here for him to see it. I have no doubt he wouldn’t appreciate people knowing his son blushed at the sight of a half-dressed female.
Choosing two seats front and center to the stage, he sits, motioning for me to sit beside him. A tall blonde comes to Wrecker’s side as soon as we’re seated, and he orders us each a beer.
It isn’t the first time he’s let me drink with him, but it is the first time in public. I’m not twenty-one, and everyone knows it. Hell, they know I’m not even eighteen yet, but she doesn’t question it when she returns with two bottles.
Aside from the waitress and the girls on the stage, the rest of the women stay away from us, almost as if they fear us. I wish the waitress who’s staying near the bar would come closer. She’s small and petite with the longest hair I’ve ever seen. It’s a dark chocolate color that falls down past her waist.
Wrecker follows my gaze. “See something you like, Son?”
“She’s beautiful.”
“She’s a whore,” he grunts with a roll of his eyes. “Out of all the women here,” he says, gesturing to the room, “she’s who you’d chose?”
Without even looking at him, I nod, not daring to pull my gaze from the plump ass covered by scraps as she walks to a table with their drinks.
Waving the tall blonde over, Wrecker whispers something in her ear. The smile on her face grows as he hands her something. The waitress watches me much like the cat who wants to eat the cannery. It’s unnerving. With a nod, she leaves his side, only returning to bring us bottle after bottle until my vision starts to blur.
“It’s time,” Wrecker says with a chuckle. “Come with me, Son.”
I’m unsteady on my feet, but I follow him to the back of the club where lights reading VIP hang above a door. With a shove, he pushes me into the room. “Make sure you take care of him,” he tells the brunette who waits for us inside.
She stands, leaning against the wall, fiddling with the strings of her panties. When Wrecker speaks, eyes of pure darkness look up at me. A nod is the only indication she’s even heard him.
Slowly, she walks over to me. Reaching out, she takes my hand in hers and leads me to the red velvet couch against the wall.
Turning around, she looks up at me. “Sit,” she whispers.
Without question, I do as she asks. Kneeling before me, she reaches up and begins undoing my belt. Putting my hand out, I halt her progress. Looking down at her with my brows pinched, I shake my head.
“Please, it’s my job to make you feel good,” she tells me, gazing up at me with fear in her eyes.
I should leave this place. I know that. Instead, I reach up using the tips of my fingers to move the strand of hair that’s fallen in her eyes before caressing her cheek with my palm.
“Please,” she pleads.
With a nod, I lean back on the couch, staring at the ceiling above. She slips my dick from my jeans and takes me in her mouth. It takes minutes until she does this thing with her tongue that has me blowing right there. I know I’m ruined. Jacking off will never be as good as this.
I’ve barely caught my breath before she stands in front of me, untying the strings of her panties. I watch as a scrap of fabric drops to the floor at her feet. I expect her to lay on the couch or something. Never in a million years did I expect her to climb onto my lap.
“Wait, what are you doing?” I ask, gently pushing her off my lap to the space beside me.
“I’m trying to make you feel good,” she says, trying to move back into my lap.
“No, you’ve already done that,” I tell her, shaking my head. I don’t even know this chick’s name. I’m not going to fuck her. Standing from the couch, I adjust my jeans and turn to leave the room.
Grabbing my arm, she halts my steps. “Please, you can’t leave. I was paid for this. It’s okay, really.”
“You were paid?” I growl at her.
Removing her hand from my arm, I storm from the room. With quick steps, I make my way through the club. I can’t believe this shit. I have no clue where the fuck I’m going right
now. I just have to get the fuck out of here. Before I’m even out of the parking lot, Wrecker comes to my side.
With a chortle, he slaps me on the shoulder and tells me, “Now, you’re finally a man.”
Without even thinking, I draw back and punch him in the face. “I didn’t fuck her,” I scream at him. “You’re a special kind of fucked up,” I finish before running from the parking lot.
That was the last time I was at this fucking club. I didn’t think I’d ever set foot in this hell hole again. Flexing my shoulders, I feel the pull of the scars that rest there for all eternity, reminding me I have no choice in this life.
With a deep breath, I walk into the bar that changed my life as I knew it.
Chapter 4
Drunk as fuck is the only way to describe the condition I’m in right now. My brothers have been feeding me shots all damn night. I should’ve stopped accepting them hours ago, but I needed something to fill the void in my soul—a void I fear will follow me until my dying breath.
In my drunken state, I can’t help but think of the girl I saw the last time I was here. Stumbling up to one of the waitress, I slur, “There used to be a brunette who worked here. Where is she?”
I may not have been ready to seal the deal back then, but now, I can’t find a more fitting way to end this shit show of a night.
“There’s only one brunette who works here,” she says, pointing to a girl who's currently giving Rebel a lap dance.
Shaking my head, my whole body sways. “Not that bitch. This one was about this tall,” I tell her, raising my hand mid-chest to show the woman's small stature. “With hair down to her plump little ass and the darkest eyes I’ve ever seen.”
Her pupils grow wide as she says, “Marisol,” so softly I barely hear her. “She doesn’t work here anymore,” the waitress tells me as she tries to hurry away.
